We choose focal length in relation to crop factor to frame the subject to our liking. In your scenario, with the D800, I would either step forward, or choose the appropriate focal length lens to get the desired framing, and I would still have 36MP of detail to your 24MP.

I disagree. Some in photography shoot with what they have if they cannot afford a $10,000 500mm lens
