He, he... that's another way to see the MC 58/1.2!

It's actually a very compact lens, but damn heavy for it's size: almost half a kilo! At least, every gram converts into image quality

As to the odd 58mm lens diameter implemented earlier by Minolta, Nikon, et al, the reason seems to be that the 58mm lenses were easier to design i.e., in terms of mathematics, and provided a more true-to-life perspective, from what I have read in another forum. Their demise apparently was caused by growing unpopularity, as the photography market demanded lenses that were easier to shoot with, such as the 50mm lenses.
