Nikon 300 is very very slow focusing. Forget it for moving objects, but great for still objects.
I must disagree completely. I think it depends very much on your perspective. If you're used to shooting the 300 2.8 or other super high quality pro lenses, the 300 f4 may be slower. The lenses I own are generally mid to high quality consumer lenses, and the Nikon 300 f4 focuses WAY faster. The 70-300VR and others offer no competition on image sharpness OR focus speed. I have shot with the 300 2.8 and the 500 f4. In my opinion (with somewhat limited experience), the Nikon 300 f4 is nearly as quick as these lenses at focusing.
So, I guess I'm not disagreeing completely, but I do think it depends immensely on what you're comparing the focus speed to.
