Canon better bring out a capable successor to the 7D soon
Apr 21, 2012

No flames, just an honest opinion.

I think it is fair to say that Canon has stagnated in recent years with DSLR development (the 5DIII is at best a marginal upgrade to the 5DII), whereas Nikon really made some strides. No, I don't mean to start a Canon v. Nikon war, please, I am just stating a fact . Canon seems to be resting on their glory, and worse yet, they seem to have shifted their strategy to becoming mainly a Cinema camera/lens company. This may well be a smart move for the company, but unfortunately for DSLR users this is not good.

The 7D is due for an upgrade. I think Canon better put some good features in it. I think it better be 24MP at least, perhaps even 30MP. Of course, I know within minutes those "why do you need more pixels?", "18MP/12MP/6MP/3MP is more than enough!" camp people will jump out, but let's be clear: more pixels does not necessarily mean worse pixel level performance . My 21MP 5DII has better per-pixel characteristics than my 6MP D60. You can have higher resolution and better pixel level performance in a new generation of sensors. Yes, it is a challenge, but that's what pushes companies to innovate.

Why am I interested? Because I am looking for an upgrade to my 50D. Yes, the 7D is a capable camera, I am not saying anything otherwise. But since I have one camera (actually more than one) to use for now, I can wait for the next leap of innovations. And leap I hope it will be.
