With the EVF you see pretty much what you get -- and every experienced raw photographer know that we can get a lot more detail from the darkest areas when stretching the curves at the post processing stage. For jpg shooters the EVF is pretty close to what you get straight out of the camera.

With the OVF you will see a much wider dynamic range, but then you don't have a clue about the DR range of the sensor for a given high contrast scene. This is especially a problem when shooting jpg, but also a concern when using raw.

There are lots of aspects the OVF/EVF discussion, but the particular issue Reichman pointed out here and illustrated so well was that the EVF caused him to shot blind in the shadows, where the interesting action was.

As he said: ”It's worth noting that not just EVFs, but LCDs as well suffer from this lack of on-screen dynamic range, with blocked-up shadow areas. For this reason I don't expect pros and some serious amateurs to relinquish their optical viewfinder equipped DSLRs in the foreseeable future.”

Unless they optimize the EVF DR when shooting RAW, by dialing contrast minus 3, neutral or portrait effect, DRO auto or max.

Despite special tricks and workarounds I still dont think the DR ever will be as good as what can pulled out of the RAW file in PP, not to mention what you can see with an OVF.

The question us how academic the difference becomes. The LL example wouldn't have been an issue.

Seems like it would have been an issue. He pushed it from ISO 100 to 12.000 eqv in LR4.
