I was at a party today using face detection (via live view), and it's wonderful!
I had the 50mm f/1.4G and 24-70 f/2.8 with me, and the faster focus of the 24-70 really drove face detection's utility home. I'll be using this a lot.
What I haven't done much of yet in a social setting is try face detection via the viewfinder, which I'll play with next.
