Just as a point of information the earthquake in Japan was not that large (worst anywhere in centuries). My wife happened to actually be in the worst recorded earthquake ever which was in Chile in 1960, measured at 9.5. The tsunami from that killed 142 people in Japan and was still 35 ft high 6000 miles away, and still was measurable after two circles of the Earth. In terms of energy release that earthquake accounts for 25% of the total world wide seismic energy measured since the development of the seismometer.

The second worst earthquake in the recent past occurred in Alaska and was a 9.2.

The third worst earthquake was the Sumatran one that triggered the horrific tsunami that killed many thousands. That was a 9.1.

The Japanese earthquake was only the fourth largest at 9.0.
