The outermost AF points can have problems if something is miscalibrated, but try it on more contrasty object or black&white line.

The outermost AF points have weaker performance on my D700 too and while they're working good without flash when I attach SB-700 or SB-900 I get instantly back focus problem until I use central AF point or switch off red AF assist on flash.. no matter of lens I use & no resolution yet it's very irritating to me.

The outermost AF points are only vertical sensitive so keep this in mind and try some horizontal line. May be you get better results.

I really hope to have it fixed..or me! I love my D800... is just that little focus thing!

I really tried so many different targets, real world ones, Bold Black words on A4 sheets spread across the wall, downloaded charts, even I came up with this:
