Please note that both are very defensive positions that appear to be collaborative whilst sapping Sony's development and marketing resources. It's as if Sony got stuck moving from conservative Japanese business culture to a more Western model - innovation is encouraged but management doesn't know what to do with it.
What you all are pretty much ignoring is that Samsung and LG follow the same kind marketing model as Sony for most of their devices, and are doing quite well. They have lots of different TV models, phone models and so on. In fact the Apple model of making just a couple of well designed products does not work for every company or every market, but it's rather an anomaly than something that all companies could successfully follow. Sony may have at times overdone their model range, but making just a few high end models would mean abandoning a significant portion of their current markets.
