Upcoming New Orleans trip - hubsand worried about theft

We are traveling to New Orleans and Baton Rouge in a few weeks and my husband is pointing out the high crime rate in New Orleans, even for simple daytime muggings, and is recommending to me to leave my dSLR at home.

What do you guys think? I didn't buy a dSLR to not use when I want to use it, but I also don't want to risk my gear stolen off of me. Any tips if I do choose to take it? I do have insurance on all of my gear with USAA.
