To Stir Up A Hornets' Nest: An Interesting Experience...
In reply to db., Apr 18, 2012

Only two days ago I start-
ed this thread. How interest-
ing a time I've had mean-
while! What an experience!

There are a few questions
this controversy brings up:

1) Of all those answering
nobody agrees with me.
Not one. Convinced I'm
right (please excuse my
lack of modesty here), I
do wonder if—as I hope—
there is something like a
Silent Majority that would
back me. Or if I my stance
on the subject is indeed
not shared by anyone
else...

2) All those who answer-
ed are Americans. Is that
so because Americans
are used to stand up
for their opinion while
we Europeans often do
prefer to avoid a contro-
versy if the subject is not
of major importance to us?
Or has our Challenge be-
come nowadays a most-
ly US affair? There used
to be quite an amount of
contenders from Europe,
Asia and—at least one—
from Africa. Are they no
longer active here? Or
do they all belong to the
above mentioned Silent
Majority (if there is such
a "thing" at all)?

3) What I plea for, is in
my interest (which, IMO,
is perfectly legitimate in
a democratic process):
I prefer to show my im-
ages somewhat bigger
and with somewhat
more detail (photos in
the dpr galleries leave
me, therefore, more of-
ten in awe than the ones
I usually see in our
challenge). Practically
all those of you who re-
plied to my request vote
against it, saying they
"don't need that". If they
think they don't, why do
they not allow me to take
advantage of such an ad-
justment? They would not
be forced to make use of
it themselves, would they?
I don't—in this context—
understand the phrase
"I don't need it, so he
shouldn't get it". I don't
think raising the limit
would do any harm to
anyone...

4) I considered the first an-
swer I've got to be some-
what rude. That did not, I
must say, help me to con-
front the whole discussion
with ease and calmly (as I
had expected). It put me
into a bad mood and I do
apologize if that showed.
I wonder if this rudeness
is the new tone here or if
I had, possibly, myself—
without realizing it— start-
ed off on the wrong foot:
English, as you know, is
not my mother tongue and
in a foreign language one
easily hits unwillngly the
wrong tone. If this hap-
pened here, I do apolo-
gize.
