I haven't used the 17-40mm, nor been tempted by it. I use the 24mm-105mm f/4. They are both f/4, the 24-105 has IS and longer reach. I have never wished for 'wider'.
Try a few shots @ 17mm and compare to 24mm and see what you think. Will you miss that little extra, or will a few steps back give you the same thing, only with IS?
