D4/ D800(E) - Left AF Problem
Apr 18, 2012

Recently I heard Nikon's new D800 have a left AF problem.
So I tested my D800 and my friends' D800/D800E/D4.

I checked 8 bodies. (four D800s, two D800Es, two D4s)

  • D800 : 4

  • D800E : 2

  • D4 : 2

Test condition

  • Wide lens (14-24 F2.8, 24mm F1.4G, 35mm F1.4G) with distance of 3m

  • Standard lens (Sigma 50mm F1.4, AF 85mm 1.4D ) with distance of 8m

  • Camera is fiexed on the tripod.

  • Every tests are confirmed by comparing 'contrast AF' in live-view mode.

  • My lenses are perfect in D700 and D3s.

Auto focus near center is really good.
Right side AF is slightly de-focused (not so serious).

All of these camera, however, show significant focusing error in case of left AFs.
3 left AF points result in further focal plane.

When I checked AF ability of my D800 'near' the target, I didn't notice these problem. I think this is really big problem.
Most of all, I found the same AF problem not only in D800(E) but also in D4.

Auto focus module for these new products seems to be not so accurate.
I am very disappointed with this test.
