I have to say I never use the in-camera editing tools. Ever. It's all in post processing.

I think my query is misunderstood by you. It doesn't matter whether one uses some of the features or not because that depends on individual choice.

Rather 'm interested to know, if the feature is possible to use effectively or not.

In-camera retouching options for D5100:
• D-Lighting
• Red-eye reduction
• Trimming
• Monochrome & filter effects
• Color balance
• Image overlay
• NEF (RAW) processing
• Resize
• Quick retouch
• Straighten
• Distortion control
• Fisheye
• Color outline
• Color sketch
• Perspective control
• Miniature effect
• Selective Color
• Edit movie
• Side-by-side comparison)

The above items ofcourse can be achieved by any post-processing software (e.g. Lightroom, Photoshop, etc.) but not as easy as the camera's one - particularly for some one who is not so much familiar with the later software (amateur like me). Say, if I want to make a selective color or color sketch or miniature effect in Lightroom (which I use, Photoshop is not yet for me) then I'll be lost.
