Here's a way for Sony to look like a tech leader: make the O/S for a camera like the NEX into a real computer. Still have it be a camera, of course, but open it up to non-Sony programmers to add functions, completely revamp the menus, etc. Somebody would soon develop menus strictly oriented to novices; somebody else would develop menus oriented to professionals; somebody else would provide software to turn the thing into a lomography machine; somebody else would optimize it for astrophotography; etc. etc.

There would be no need for Sony to make a one-size-fits-all UI; no need for all Nex owners to wait and wait and pray and pray for a once-every-year-or-two firmware upgrade to fix all problems. Owners could switch to different interfaces any time they wanted to.

The current functions to emulate a toy camera, or simulate a til-shift lens, are nearly useless because you have to pick the function first, and then you're stuck with that one effect. An outside programmer could make those things into non-destructive edits that you could try out to your heart's content AFTER the photo was taken--the way that Instagram and countless other photo apps work on smart phones.

Sony wouldn't have to hire UI experts in-house (which they don't seem to want to do in any event) because outside app developers would present scores (thousands?) of choices to users; the market would identify good menu systems, useful functions, fun apps, etc.

The whole approach would benefit users immeasurably--and, of course, Sony as well.
