18-55 kit lens vs vintage minolta beercan for a beginner

Hi there everyone! I'm planning to buy my first DSLR. I've done some extensive research on the matter and have decided to get the A57 as its seems to be newbie-friendly and inexpensive. I'll be using the camera mainly for video (weddings, birthdays, etc).
Guys, I would appreciate your advise if I should get the 18-55 kit lens along with the camera or should I just settle for the body only and use my money to get a vintage Minolta lens. I'm eyeing the the so-called 'mini beercan.' Is such a lens a step above the kit lens? Can anyone suggest a good all-around beginner's lens?
