5D3 light-leaking: design issue or production flaw?

Really hope the light-leaking issue is not a major design flaw. This would hit Canon heavy. On the other hand, if it is "just" a production problem I wonder how fast they can solve it. The post lists also the possibility that Canon may address the problem with a firmware update that would switch off the backlight while metering or shooting. That would be crazy, like a sort of patch.
