Discordant reviews of G1X
Apr 17, 2012

Three discordant reviews of the G1X:

1. Kirk Tuck feels guilty posting an Amazon link for the G1X:
http://visualsciencelab.blogspot.com/2012/02/canon-g1x-nice-guy-camera.html

On the MFT forum here he adds:

“And you'll need every bit of that high ISO performance to make nice images with that f5.8 lens. When I played with the camera I also had an Olympus EP3 coupled with a 45mm 1.8 over my shoulder. The G1X is not even in the same universe. Ultimate win to m4:3.”

Kirk Tuck is a professional photographer in Austin Texas, where he does a lot of commercial work, including studio portraits, and on-site portraits and other photographs for commercial firms. He appears to be an authority on complex lighting schemes for commercial photography. I like his work.

I can easily imagine that the G!X is not ideal for his kind of photography.

2. On Steve Huff’s site, on March 22:

http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2012/03/22/a-really-quick-comparison-of-the-canon-g1x-and-leica-m9-what-by-george-sutton/

I find this direct comparison extremely helpful since I am very interested in high image quality for urban scenes. The G!X appears to be right up there with the M9 for this kind of environment.

3. Canon has a spokesman, Gary Knight, whom they call an Ambassador. Gary is a photojournalist, quite a different style of photography from that of Kirk Tuck. Even though he is a paid spokesman, I find his testimony very helpful. I notice that he uses the camera just as I do the G12, using the articulating screen in the horizontal position so his work is as unobtrusive as possible, something important to him and to me.

Here is the site for that video, which strictly speaking is not a review but an advertisement:

http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/education/technical/powershot_g1_x_on_film_gary_knight.do

Judging from his portfolio:

http://www.garyknightphotography.com/#a=0&at=0&mi=2&pt=1&pi=10000&s=0&p=7

Canon chose a a pretty good spokesman.

Addendum: I didn’t know this when I started wrting this post, but I have just looked up Gary Knight on Wiki and found and in his areas of specialty, wars, and human rights, he is world class.
