with D7100 on the horizon (Photokina ? or end-of-year) there's no space to a D400 DX, too much similar, even a slight better AF, a 1-2 fps more with grip & huge battery isn't going to sell well at $2,000 the D7100 will be a better value for 1,200-1,300 by far. the D7100 can be simply a D7000, improved 16Mp sensor with 51-points AF (make no sense to use the 39p in only a body) maybe a little slower with full body magnesium, 3.2" lcd.

the Nikon will not use the same 24Mp all the way on all DX bodies, make no sense and if the 24 Mp was truly spectacular why intro it into your low price body first ?

IF the D400 was DX, it should be already announced with the old sony 24 Mp Dx with delivery in june.

The D400 or whatever Nikon will call it, will be FX and announced in Nov-Dic and assembled in China/Thailandia 24Mpx at $2,000-2,200.

No Pro DX lens in years, the market is drifting to FX for Top prosumer and up, why introduce a $2,000 DX Body now ?

For Sporting there's the D4 or the D400 FX, if you want more reach use the D400 in crop mode or buy the D7x00 at 6fps, you're a tiny % of overall market. the d7000 can compete just now with 7d, the D7100 can even match or surpass easly the 7d for good so what ?

there's no way that Nikon can Skip the $2,000 market for a FF any longer, the D700 is dying with minimal avaliability. the old 5DmII is simply running the floor for under $2,000.
