FOV of the human eye, walk around lens?

Can someone help me figure out what's wrong here?

I want to buy a walk around prime for my 7D.

Ok, 50mm on a FF body is the walk around lens being that this is the FOV of the human eye.

On a crop body that's what, around 31mm. Ok, so I've been looking at a 30mm sigma.

To get used to the focal length I was keeping my 15-85 at 30 and going around shooting. I realised that when I looked through the view finder, I was getting a much wider FOV than my eye. So I kept my two eyes open and moved the zoom until the focal length matched my eye. I look at the lens and it is exactly 50mm!

What am I missing? Could it be because I am using a zoom?
