+1 on yellowdog's recommendation - I went to many of the same place in 2009 using an XSi and an EF-S 17-55 and it was ideal and was used on 95%+ of my shots. There were a few times when I was shooting indoors that I needed something wider than 17mm on a crop sensor camera. Your choice seems reasonable for most of the trip. The most important things was a fast lens for indoors shots where you couldn't use a flash or tripod.
