For outdoor sports I think you'd be better off with a Nikon D7000 or a used D300s.

Personally, I'd go with the D300s. I've owned both and the D300s AF is more reliable. Inferior bodies like the Rebels and D3100, D5100 won't have a good enough AF to track fast moving subjects.
