That's the "old 24-120" I was talking about. I got good results with it on film and on my D100, as long as I paid attention to its faults - moustache distortion and weird stretchy corners on the wide end, and weird patchy softness in the corners at the long end... and not the sharpest lens overall.

I suspect you may be shooting with at worst, the first VR version which was worlds better than the original, but still much reviled on forums like these. I made a lot of money shooting publicity stills for musicians in miserable club lighting with that lens.

The current 24-120VR F4 is a wonderful lens, by comparison to the older ones, but also to many other Nikkors. Still softer at 120mm than at other focal lengths, and most of Nikon's 4x or more zooms share that characteristic.
