In another thread someone recommended reading the book: "Light the Science and Magic". I am going to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th that advice. What you need is knowledge of lighting and how it works. Then you will be able to figure out what gear you need in order to get the shot you want. As an example, you could light this with a small flashlight, akin to light painting, if you so desired. You could use the lowest powered strobe available to mankind... and if that wasn't enough power you could just keeping popping the strobe until you reached the desired aperture. More powerful strobes would make it easier. If you have too much power, you can simply add more diffusion or a ND gel. In the end, photography is painting with light. How you use the light will determine the final outcome of your image. As such, you need to know about light.
