I think that for something as important as a product photograph, $200 is not a lot to pay for autofocus. Thanks for the advice.

The new 50mm f1.8 AF-S costs just over $200 new and it will autofocus with the D40X, there's also the 35mm f1.8 AF-S for just a bit less, but from what I've seen the 50mm has better bokeh.
