Full set of RAW & JPG D800/D800E/5DM3 photos
Apr 13, 2012

From a couple co-workers:

"For each camera, we shot a sequence of photos in one stop increments from 100 ISO to 3200 ISO, and at all the available ISO settings the camera offered above and below the this ISO range.

We used the manufacturer’s 50mm 1.4 lens on all cameras. (We used the same lens on the D800 and D800E, but obviously it’s a different lens on the 5DM3.) We shot at f5.6 in Aperture Priority mode. Since the low ISO settings required long shutter times, we used a remote to trigger all shots. We set the camera focus on the resolution chart, then switched to manual focus to keep that same focus setting for all shots. We used spot metering to set the exposure based on the grey card. We set up the cameras with equivalent settings where ever possible.

There were a few anomalies that we saw, and if we had time, it would have been interesting to do some additional shooting to explore these in more detail:

  • Despite the fact that all cameras were spot metering on the grey card, the Nikon shots were consistently darker than the Canon shots. So, this created a difference that makes it a little more difficult to directly compare the photos.

  • We were shooting at f5.6, so everything in the frame should have been within the focus range of the lens. However, it appears that the Canon shots are soft around the periphery of the frame. The Nikon shots are clearly sharp edge-to-edge. I am planning on some more tests with the 5DM3 and the 50mm 1.4 to dig into this in more detail."
