The OP didn't state that his mum needs a new cam so urgently for any special occassions. The cam I mentioned is due to be released in this month. Some websites estimate the street price will be around $350 at first, which is the same level as an EX1. There's nothing wrong to consider a soon to be released cam. In this thread most posters don't recommend EX1, neither did I recommend it.

In one earlier post snake_b highly recommended S95 or S100, and he recommended IXUS and A series as well. Basically he prefers Canon DC's to other brands'. It was his goodwill to recommend equipments he thought were good, but as the new Samsung cam is not on sale yet, at this stage no one should dismiss it or imply the new cam will not be as good as the available ones.

As others have pointed out, for low light indoor photography the DC's zoom range is qite meaningless. Most become fixed lens cams. Among the campact cams, EX1 and Olympus XZ1 maintain a large aperture at tele end. If OP's mum wants zoom in low light she may like to consider these two. But personally I don't use my EX1 often.

Here are two straight out of camera photos taken at 72mm by EX1, in "Smart Auto" mode. These samples are just ok, nothing to call home about.
