You should be comparing it to D7000. The D800 - especially the D800E version - will make it look relatively poor on a full-image basis.

Not so sure. Go here

set ISO 200 and have a look against D800. Check fine textures all around, pay attention to some puffy balls (especially red and yellow) and so on. D800 maybe a winner, but only with a big "maybe"

DOF and focus are different. Many parts are therefore more crisp in the SD1 crops, but not here:

This Sigma SD1 sample was taken using the Sigma 17-50mm lens at 50mm f8. The nikon sample was taken using a 85mm lens at f11. The Sigma 17-50mm does suffer from corner softness. The sample would have been much better using the Sigma 50mm Macro.

Nonetheless, there's no escaping the color issue Marianne raised -- you can see it everywhere in the studio comparison scene.

The SD1 sample images provided by dPreview are processed very poorly. Here are the same samples that I have processed in Sigma Photo Pro for the SD1 and Adobe Camera Raw for the Nikon D800 (using default settings). "color issue" gone.
