The more you assemble and disassemble a softbox the shorter its lifetime. If you can store the assembled softboxes there is little reason that less expensive ones won't work fine. If you do a lot of location work then go with umbrella opening softboxes.

All softbox fabrics age and cause small color shifts. Using a gray card for WB is de rigueur so any color shifts from the softbox won't effect the final results.

If you do as Quantum Help suggests you should be aware that using two layers of diffusion material, separated by a space, will give you more even lighting. The greater the separation, the more even the light will be. You can buy diffusion sheets from companies like Roscolux or you can use the tracing paper drafters use.

Fine white translucent silk, Dacron, or nylon can also be used. It is easy to make a PVC frame and cover it with these fabrics.

I strongly recommend buying and studying the book, Light Magic and Science .

You should also study this web site. It is about photographing jewelry but the principles apply to any small subject.
