Re: D800 is like a coolpix... no ES-LV whatsoever!!! even Powershots have it

Is this true?? still no ExpSim LV for the d800?? LOL.

thats retarded. its 2012. For it to be a touted as landscape camera and not have ExpSIm LV is kinda backward.

This is the first time Im gonna bash a nikon camera because I always liked them - Ive recommended the D7000 to everyone i know who wanted a dlsr and did not care about video. Four of my friends have the d7000 because I recommended it. I would recommend the D800 over the 5D3 to someone starting out as well.

I was actually surprised to find out that the d7000 didnt have ExpSim LV , but more than 1 year forward and a premium Nikon camera still doesnt have it?

Its not really a back breaker , but still , why could they not manage to include it? Anyway, same could be said about Canons not having focus assist lights and pro boides not having pop up flashes.

ES-LPV = Exposure Simulation Live Preview (common on PowerShots w/ M)

ExpSim LV = EOS dSLR version of ES-LV (but also includes 'dof' preview; aperture stopped down OR 'full open' exposure simmed for a stopped down aperture.

D800:
2: Better control ergonomics (more, and well placed, dials).

really?

D800 front finger dial close to front grip (such that one can inadvertently make unwanted adjustments)

D800 rear thumb dial close to thumb rest (such that one can inadvertently make unwanted adjustments)

D800 dials? that 5DMkIII cannot do better/faster w/ their placement?
D800 buttons to do more of what? that 5DMkIII cannot do better/faster?

The 5D Mark iii has advantages in the following areas:
1: Speed. A combination of FPS and speed of operation

yes... speed, which

includes adjustment controls of speed/aperture/iso (w/o resorting to 'menu-only-screens' or 'top lcd screen')... if you've ever seen what ExpSim LV in full M/M-ISO is... you'd understand 'speed' of 'creative digital preview image control for exposure-sensitivity' well beyond anything that relied on TTL metering of non-ExpSim LV systems like D800/D700 and even non-LV like 5D.

3: Handling ergonomics. Hands down the mark iii grip and feeling is better then the D800. Not to mention that it is lighter

'just' the grip 'feels good'...

5DMkIII grip is uncluttered, and top finger dial is ideal ergonomically that it allows the wrist to remain straight 'up' when holding the body grip w/ right hand when making adjustments. and just holding the body by the grip-thumbrest itself will never be prone to front or rear dial accidental adjustments. the large thumbwheel is placed ergonomically for optimal position for 'full circle spins'.

Nikon dSLR shooters have already complained about the shortcoming of a grip that is prone to unwanted adjustments even when merely carrying it 'off-grip' 'in bag' 'hanging on neck' etc.

What about problems ? Some mark iii angst about light leaks which has yet to have any proven effect on anything and any proof that its either unique, or an issue

assuming one still uses TTL metering sensors at all; given Canon has ExpSim LV which is done 'realtime evaluation' by the sensor itself, not the a separate 'metering' sensor. ExpSim LV especially in Full-M/M-ISO is unaffected by the non-image unrelated TTL sensor metering system (it is merely mirrored optical sensing; and any other extraneous light like OVF leak or anywhere else, like the lcd backlight)

since you are unfamiliar with ExpSim LV... just as CBS dSLR pro users are unfamiliar with it... (they didn't even know one could preview WB Temp K color adjustment 'live in realtime'... and were 'chimping' as though they had no live view at all... (i.e. for their live-view... they had ExpSim LV never 'enabled'... and probably haven't even see what it does in Full M/M-ISO)). i already have even 7D shooters telling me ExpSim LV doesn't really exist... and doesn't do anything 'sim' whatsoever. proof... they didn't even enable it either, and use it for 'full m/m-iso'.

meanwhile... on a Nikon FF D700/D800, one is still TTL metering sensor dependent whether using A/S/P or M, thus 'chimping' is still a norm for 'confirming' selected exposure-sensitivity done 'blind' is what one expects from one's 'meter reading' of various patches of lit surfaces (depending on which metering pattern one is using).

i'm only covering things you haven't because you may be unaware of; all the rest you mention is already covered by yourself because of your familiarity with them.

when you know what ExpSim LV can do... then you will realize along w/ its two primary EOS-1 controls (wheel/dial)... you can rapidly do a lot more with just those for the most often used parameter adjustments.

this is what ExpSim LV does...

and if one doesn't have it... and the D800/D700 never did; it's liveview preview shows only a 'neutral/std' autogain 'look' completely disconnected to speed-aperture-ISO. (and an lcd that has a 'color cast' problem is useless for color/wb/saturation preview)

in order for one to have ES-LV (Canon's ExpSim LV) on a Nikon, they only offer it on their dual-grip D3/D3x/D3s/D4 (and not lower, like DXXX models)
