If I might make a suggestion -

I see a lot of good advice here, but perhaps you should start a bit simpler with something like Picasa from Google - it's a photo archiving program that also happens to do basic image editing and RAW conversions, along with some interesting things like geotagging, face recognition, etc, that you can get for free from:

This program will guide you in downloading your photos from the camera to the computer into albums; organizing and tagging your photos, and it will fix problems, crop and resize, post to the web, and print your photos - all with a very intuitive interface.

Once you master Picasa, and your needs go beyond simple photo archiving, adjusting, printing and sharing, you might look at other programs to fit your needs.

I get along with Picasa quite well, very rarely do I need anything else.
