I had the 70-300mm IS and upgraded to the 70-300 L IS - a really noticable improvement.

Wide open at 300mm I get excellent images from the L, the AF is very quick, and the IS works better. Overall I couldn't be happier (except if it was f2.8!! ... but I knew that before I purchased it!).

I have a colleague that recently purchased the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 OS and has been very impressed with it. I briefly tried it (on a Canon 7D) - AF wasn't as quick but was OK, sharpness seemed very good - similar to the L .... but it was twice the price and 3 times the size/weight
