D400: Why Nikon should (and will?) release it
Apr 9, 2012

Following the D800 news and excitement, there's been some speculation that Nikon won't be releasing a pro level DX body. While many can list the technical advantages of a dedicated DX body, I think it really comes down to economics. Namely, does Nikon think they can make as much money by having D300/s users upgrade to a D800 -- that costs nearly 2x what a D300s costs today?

No doubt some D300 shooters who have been longing for FX capability will find the D800 the perfect combo of DX and FX capabilities. Yet, there's an equally large, if not larger segment of D300 (and D80/D90/D7000) shooters for whom the FX leap does not make economic sense when 100% DX shooting will suit them just fine. Why would Nikon want to forego the earnings that sales to this portion of the market would collect?

Let's be patient. Nikon will release a D400 or something like it, and DX shooters will once again have a market leader of the sort the D300/s has been for some time now.
