Yes, it might be a good idea to reformat your new HD if you are not sure it has GUID partition table and you have an Intel processor. Apple does not officially support APM for Intel processors.

If you're not sure you can check it...start Disk Utility and select the disk.

But it does not help with opening up some room in your HD since there will always be a small portion of the capacity used for formatting and making it usable for your computer.
