I have used the VR1 lens a lot on both DX and FX. Yes, on FX the lens is soft in the corners but it has never really worried or affected me. On DX the soft corners are pretty much gone.

On Saturday I took over 300 photographs with the lens on a D700 and I can't recall seeing one shot that is noticeaply affected by soft corners because the corners were all out of the plane of focus anyway.

I am an amatuer. If you are a professional or using the lens for landscapes then soft corners may be an issue for you. But really on DX I don't see it as a big problem. If you do shoot some landscapes stopping the lens down would probably eliminate the problem entirely on DX.
