I really like the tamron 70-300mm USD. If those photos are heavily cropped you need to get in closer, plan the shots, get to know the animals and practice, getting clear well focused shots takes a lot of practice and something most of us are still learning.

This is one i managed to get with the tamron attached to a a580 that i am really happy with

As others have mentioned try and get a 500mm reflex lens but this requires good to very good lighting conditions to up the speed, higher iso settings, more patience and something to steady yourself on if not a tripod/monopod where possible to get great shots as its short physical size makes you forget the reach you are expecting from this long lens.

All the best i hope you stick with the tamron for a while as it is very versatile.
