is it $550 worth better?

Price for the non-IS version at B&H Photo $599, price of the IS version $1150.

in the world of photography gear, better is better, it is difficult to quantify "is it worth it". look at the price difference between 35 F1.4 to 35 F2, or 85 F1.2 to 85 F1.8. the IS version does many things that the non-IS cant, and it has weather seal. so generally speaking it is a good deal.

It may be better but for those of who don't have loads of money to chuck around the non_IS version is just fine.

My view, now and back when I was choosing between these two lenses, is that by the time you strip away IS and weather seal, and degrade IQ a bit, what you end up with is not really that good.

Anyone who says the 70-200 f4L non IS "is not really that good" has obviously never used one. I'm not debating the advantages of the IS version, but if you don't need IS the non IS version is a great lens.
