Assuming that Mr. White is open to trying some steps before finally giving up, I think Ian's suggestions could be helpful in helping determine if the camera is defective.

When I first received my K-5 a little over a year ago, a ran into an issue of it becoming completely unresponsive. It was my first experience with Pentax and I think I can relate to how Mr. White feels right now.

Fortunately, someone suggested that I try the reset procedure. After I did the reset, I haven't seen the problem again. It takes very little time and it costs nothing so it's worth a shot. I have bumped into the issue of a lens not focusing at all a couple of times and that was remedied by reseting the lens in the mount.

If neither of those steps help, it's worth testing it with a different lens to make sure the the problem is the body and not the lens. I see a lot of used 18-55 kit lens for sale here in Japan for about $80 - $100 (US equivalent) so the potential for that to be the weak link is very high.
