I went back and forth between your shots and I was hard pressed to see a difference. Here are some of my thoughts. First of all I have a 60D with the 15-85mm. I purchased the body alone with the 15-85mm so I never had the kit lens. I bouht this lens for a several reasons. First of all the build quality. Then there is the wider range, 24mm to I believe 140mm - film equiv. Better for a walk around. I didn't want to have to keep changing the lens - this was big for me. Full time manual focusing is also a plus in tough focus situations. Non rotating front lens, although I'm not sure if the kit lens rotates.

You may want to test your lens and make your comparisons at varying aperatures and focal lengths, especially compare 15mm the 17mm of the kit lens - wide open.

Except for the above I mentioned - I didn't expect to see a night and day diffence.
