You could probably get down to even f6-8, but then there isn't much advantage over a 1/1.7" sensor and a f2.8-4.5 lens like they have in the G12 and P7100. Gain 3 2-3 stops sensor size advantage and give it back with aperture. Net zero.

So how about a best of both worlds, like Nokia attemps with their 41mp camera that crops when zooming? A 72mp sensor in the G1X could spit out 8mp photos across a 28-336mm equivalent range while never using a smaller sensor area than a superzoom.
