I have a bit of a luxury dilemma.

Since the first press release of the D800 i knew that i wanted it. BUT!
I searched my soul for what i really want to do. AND!
The big reason why bought my first camera is my burning passion for birds. SO!
I thought i might have more fun with a 300 f 2.8 + Tc20III! BUT!
I need some oppinions about the VR and VRII. OR!
Mabye there is another, better, tele-solution.

Im using a Nikon D300s.

All I can say is that I have the 300 f2.8 VRII and also use the 2x TCIII with it and I get superb results with both the D700 and D7000. This was my long lens set up for birding until I recently obtained the 500 f4 VR. I also us eht 1.4x TCII and 1.7x TCII. If you want, I can post samples.

What to about the AF speed with the converters!? is it fast enough to keep up with a bird in flight?

With the 2x TCIII, AF speed is somewhat diminished, but in good light it should keep up with some birds in flight, maybe not all. In good light AF speed without TC is super fast, but with TC it is just quick, not super fast. The 1.4x TCII is less affected.

Neither with a TC is as quick as the 500 f4 bare.

Do you know how the 300 2.8 + tc20 speed compares to the 70-300 vr?
