It might matter, because the "outer frame" of FX might have different brightness compared with the "inter frame (DX). It is just like you zoom something at 18mm to 200mm, the exposure value may change because the composition is different.

In addition, the FX cannot compare with DX because FX will have more severe vignette and other factors which may eventually affect exposure.

I am not sure is the D800 the writer owned malfunctioned but I think comparison done in that is not proper and might have biases.
