The Sony NEX series has been widely acclaimed for its excellent image quality and substantial feature set. However it has two main weaknesses: Not enough native lenses, and the lenses in are too big for the body, especially when using an adapter.

A 36 MP sensor can help to solve both of those problems by increasing the usability of prime lenses and thus allowing small f/2.8 primes to take the place of large f/2.8 zooms. With 36MP, a 4MP crop serves to effectively triple the lens's focal length (because you are dividing each of the length and width by three). A 10x7 print at 240 ppi is possible with virtually no upsizing (2400x1680=4.032 MP), and this is sufficient for the vast majority of users.

Thus, the existing Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 becomes an effective 24-72mm f/1.8. Thus any f/2.8 pancake prime lens effectively becomes a 3x f/2.8 zoom, which normally cost $1000-2000 while the "slow" primes may be $500 at most. 24mm, 50mm, and 85mm become 24-72mm, 50-150mm, and 85-255mm. People are starting to discover with the Nikon D800 that they no longer need the huge, expensive, supertele tripod-only lenses because a 70-200mm f/2.8 or 180mm f/2.8 macro give them as much effective range as they'll ever need for all but the most exotic of uses. The same concept can apply to Sony NEX to promote the use of pocketable pancake setups with f/2.8 primes.
