I'd second a superzoom like the P510.
I travel a bit and I find that superzooms are perfect when you keep moving and need to travel light. The PQ is decent with most of the new ones and the benefits of the range versatility cannot be overstated.
Nowadays I take a superzoom (just bought the P510 to replace a Sony HX100V) and a small rugged compact for times when even the superzoom is too big.
If you are not examining your photos at the pixel level, the P510 should be more than enough.
