What is your black and white conversion workflow

I have tried several ways, mainly from books and photo mags in addition to playing around with sliders, to make B&W photos. But to my eye I have yet to find a flow that gives me the results I'm looking for. I was hoping to get some ideas as to different ways, secrets or tricks to help get better results. I am using PS CS5 as my software.
Its hard to describe what I mean by not happy as it is clearly subjective. others have liked a few that I've done. But posted B&W photos on this site are much better than anything I've been able to produce.
