It is a totally personal thing, but I think the overall effect is produced by an overall package. If you are handling a large DSLR with a thick, expensive looking lens, the accessories like flash diffuser, rotator bracket and what-not look at home on it and kinda make you look 'more pro'. One one hand, the big rig makes you more visible. On the other hand a person handling a big rig at an event is often assumed to be a hired pro, who has a 'right and authority to be there and take pictures'.

Kinda like carrying a holstered gun in New York. On the hip of a uniformed NYPD officer, it looks in place. But on regular plain-clothes guy it will definitely get some weird looks.

Attaching stuff to something like G12 is bound to greatly raise people's awareness of you, and with none of the 'pro' effect. Like putting a rear spoiler on a SMART car.

The fact that you are asking the question in the first place means you yourself are not entirely comfortable with the notion. (And nothing looks as conspicuous as a person who is uncomfortably aware of his/her own conspicuousness)
