Hi Pierre,
Congrats on your new D800E, I hope you enjoy it.

Frankly I am going to recommend that you see if you can compare the 24-120vr f4 to the 24-70 f2.8. Before I get burnt, I own a 24-0mm and it is a spectacular lens. For months on end it is the lens I use the most on my D700. Now with a D800 I will also enjoy it.

The 24-70 is very heavy, the 24-120 is 1/4 kilo lighter.
The 24-120 has VR.
The 24-120 has a longer reach.
The 24-120 gets great press.

I have had my 24-70 serviced twice for the zoom problem.

I have no experience with the 24-120mm. What I know I have gleaned form numerous reviews. The 24-120 is full of plastic, it does not have the snob appeal of the 24-70, but it may serve you better.

Just an option for you. BTW, I picked up a 50mm f1.8 a few weeks ago. I am really having fun with it. I have become a zoom person, but the lite weight and compact size make it a fun lens.

I hunt, I peck, I squint, all on a MacBook Pro 13" laptop. So don't laugh, I'm happy there aren't more typo's! (Love the screen and touch pad, hate the keyboard.)
