My reading of the 5D III's manual (p 80) is that the 24-70 only uses one dual cross-type AF point, not five. (Presuming the Mk II, which isn't specifically listed, is the same as the Mk I in this regard.)

I'm afraid you're mistaken. I was discussing the 24-70f2.8L II...and this state-of-the-art lens does provide additional sensitivity in the five central AF points of the 5D3.
