I don't dispute that a D700 with an 85mm f/1.4 will produce much better results than a small-sensor camera with a slow lens. But the D700 clanks and the Nikon 1 doesn't; this can be an overriding consideration.

Only depends on how loud the area and performer is. Loud club and loud musician = no problem.
