Yes, that's why I said it would be semi-automatic! The OP only has a few hundred pictures, so if he really can't have "version" in his version name its a solution. A more automated way would be to write an AppleScript which could strip to the word "version" from the version name. But that's something which would take a bit of time to write and test and not everyone is able to write AS.
I just wanted to note that despite some saying otherwise, it is possible to make this version rename using Aperture, even if in a roundabout kind of way.
